Nine Singers Advance to Final Round of Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions

THE METROPOLITAN OPERA announced today that nine singers have advanced to the final round of its 2020 National Council Auditions, which will culminate in the public Grand Finals concert at the Met on Sunday, March 1.

The semifinalists include: mezzo Gabrielle Beteag, 25, from Lilburn, GA; mezzo Lindsay Kate Brown, 28, from Waterloo, NY; baritone Blake Denson, 24 from Paducah, KY; tenor Jonah Hoskins, 23, from Saratoga Springs, UT; soprano Chasiti Lashay, 27, from Houston, TX; soprano Jana McIntyre, 28 from Santa Barbara, CA; soprano Alexandria Shiner, 29, from Waterford, MI; soprano Denis Vélez, 27, from Mexico City, Mexico; and baritone Xiaomeng Zhang, 29, from Wenzhou, China.

Chosen from more than 1,000 singers who took part in the National Council auditions process, this year’s semifinalists will each perform two arias accompanied by the Met Opera Orchestra conducted by Bertrand de Billy. The competition will be adjudicated before a panel of administrators from the Met and other companies, with National Council winners receiving individual cash prizes of $20,000; the remaining finalists will each receive $10,000. This year marks the first time in twenty years that the competition’s prize money has increased; winners previously received $15,000 and remaining finalists were given $7,500.
